How can I hear alarms if I am deaf or hard-of-hearing?

How can I hear a house alarm, a smoke alarm or a fire alarm at night when I am sleeping if I am deaf or hard of hearing?

Alerting devices use a loud tone, flashing lights or vibrations to alert people with hearing loss to various environmental sounds.

Specialised smoke alarms are available for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. These have a strobe light and/or a vibrating pad that can be placed under the pillow, which activates when the smoke alarm sounds and can be interconnected with conventional audible alarms in different locations within the home.
