What do hearing aids cost?

Hearing aids can vary greatly in price and may not provide any additional benefit for your type of hearing loss.

The first step is to organise a hearing test with a qualified audiologist. When done, ask for a copy of your hearing test (audiogram) from the audiologist that did the hearing test.

Discuss any problems you have with hearing and communication and speak to the audiologist about your lifestyle, e.g. you work and have to answer the phone and attend meetings. You enjoy social functions and family gatherings.

Ask the audiologist why they recommend a particular aid/aids and how they will assist you to hear better in the situations you have outlined.

We suggest you seek information and a quotation from other audiologists as well.

Ensure you compare the same level of features with each brand of hearing aids and check what follow-up service is included in the price, if any.

Ask questions relevant to the device you are being recommended or comparing, for example:

  • Are the hearing aid batteries rechargeable, and what is the cost difference between rechargeable and standard batteries?
  • How do I look after my aids, and is there a service plan allowing me to visit the audiologist regularly for checking, cleaning, adjustment and battery supplies?
  • What is the cost of the plan and is it an annual fee?
